things to do and see in Aberdeenshire

Fairytale Castles

Aberdeenshire really is a dream because it has all the best bits of Scotland in one place! To start with, its nickname is ‘Castle County’ as there are over 70! Very close to Findrack are Crathes and Craigievar which are great places to find your cultural fix. There is also a fantastic array of gardens in Aberdeenshire to visit.

whisky galore

You couldn’t come to Scotland without either drinking lots of whisky or visiting a distillery. We recommend you do both. There are lots to choose from but our favourite is Royal Lochnagar which is right next to Balmoral, the Queen’s summer residence, and would allow you to visit the charming town of Ballater also. Private tastings can be arranged at the Findrack cottage with the head distiller. As well as whisky, Aberdeenshire is home to the UK’s first rum distillery in Banchory and has a newly established gin trail!

skiing

You might not know but Scotland is (sometimes) a top spot for skiing. The Cairngorm Mountains are just beyond Ballater (and the distillery) where you can rent skis for the day and hit the slopes of Glenshee – the largest ski resort in Scotland. Great fun for both the beginner and the expert.

go walkabout

The great outdoors is literally on your doorstop. The estate offers a wealth of lovely walks and if you are keen to go farther afield this can easily be arranged.

riding

Private riding lessons with qualified, friendly instructors can be arranged. Exciting hacks for experienced riders; safe gentle treks for the novice. Excellent facilities include a covered arena, and all riding hats and boots are supplied.

wildlife photography

We welcome any budding wildlife photographers and will certainly give you some tips on where to go (although you’ll have to keep this top secret!) .

cycling

The Deeside Way is great for cycling enthusiasts; leaving Banchory the route takes you through Blackhall Forest before joining a superb new section at Potarch which leads on to Kincardine O’Neil. From here, the route takes you through Dinnet, then the picturesque Cambus O’May station and suspension bridge before reaching the Old Royal Station in Ballater, now a visitor centre. Great views over open countryside and the River Dee! This is one of many trails we can direct you to. You are welcome to bring your own bike or there are numerous places to hire them.

golf

Scotland is the home of Golf and we are surrounded by courses: Alford, Aboyne, Aboyne Loch, Ballatar, Banchory and Inchmarlo Golf Centre, which also has a driving range. Pretty much every village in Scotland has a course and within a 5 mile radius of Findrack there are two 9 hole golf courses!

world-famous gliding

Gliding is a fantastic way to see the stunning countryside of Aberdreamshire! The Deeside Gliding Club airstrip at Dinnet is not far and offers trial lessons in a dual control glider – thrilling! Soaring conditions at Dinnet are renowned and the British altitude record for a two-seater glider was set here in 1995 at 37,730 feet …which is higher than a jet when cruising!

wild swimming

On a hot August day in Aberdeenshire there is nothing better to do than go for a dip in a burn or a river! There are lots of beautiful spots to ‘wildswim’ – and we can easily tell you where the best ones are so long as you don’t disturb the fishermen!

relaxation

If all the action with Findrack Sporting has got too much for you, or you have a sore arm from catching such big fish, why not book a massage? There are a few different places to go for this in either Aboyne or Banchory, both very close by. Various places have swimming pools and offer beauty treatments.

children's entertainment

We are keen to promote outdoor activities and country sports amongst children, and therefore offer lessons in shooting and fishing. We know that if you have young children flexibility is paramount. Findrack Sporting is very much a family business and we will do our best to cater for all your needs. If the activities listed above aren’t enough to keep the little ones entertained the nearby Deeside Activity Park offers everything from archery to orienteering, paint-balling to go-karting. We welcome children of all ages and we can easily find nannies for babies and toddlers if necessary.
